Privacy policy
Dinner Decided (dinnerdecided.me) picks a nearby restaurant for you. There are no accounts, and we don't ask for your name or email. This page explains what information is involved when you use the site and who handles it.
Saved on your device
Your recent spins (up to 20), saved restaurants, hidden restaurants and your Day / Night theme choice are kept in your browser's local storage. They never leave your device and we can't see them. Clearing this site's data in your browser deletes them.
Your location
- Approximate location. When the page loads, our hosting provider (Vercel) estimates your city from your IP address so we can start the search near you. We use it to run that search and don't store it.
- Precise location. Only if you tap the locate button and allow it in your browser. Your coordinates are sent to our server to search for nearby restaurants and are not stored.
- Places you search for. Text you type into the location box is sent to our server to suggest matching cities, neighborhoods and ZIP codes.
To answer these searches our server queries the Google Maps Platform (Places API), sending the search area, your filters and any location text you typed. Search results are cached on our server for about 30 minutes so repeat searches are fast.
Services that receive your browser's requests
- Vercel hosts the site and keeps standard request logs (such as IP address and browser type) for a limited time. Our server also uses your IP address for about a minute to limit request rates. Vercel privacy policy
- Google serves restaurant photos and, when shown, ads. Your browser loads these directly from Google, which receives your IP address. Restaurant data comes from Google Maps. Google privacy policy
- Directions, website and phone links open Google Maps, the restaurant's site or your phone app; those are governed by their own policies.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used: pages viewed, the device and browser type, your approximate region, and actions such as spinning, saving or hiding a restaurant or changing location. These events don't include which restaurants you see or your location. Google Analytics uses cookies and receives your IP address. How Google uses this information; you can opt out with Google's Analytics opt-out add-on.
Advertising
We show ads through Google AdSense to keep Dinner Decided free. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on those visits. Learn more in how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google's My Ad Center, or opt out of some third-party vendors' cookies at aboutads.info.
Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent through Google's consent message before analytics cookies, personalized ads or ad cookies are used. Where the site offers it, the Privacy choices link at the bottom of every page lets you review or change your choice at any time, including opting out of the sale or sharing of personal information under US state privacy laws.
Sharing
A shared restaurant link contains only that restaurant's Google place id, never your location. If you share to X, Facebook, WhatsApp, Reddit, email or text, that app or site handles what you post under its own privacy policy.
Reports
If you use Report a problem or Report an issue, we receive your message and, if you leave the box checked, technical details listed in the form: the page, your browser and window size, the Day / Night theme and your current filters. Restaurant reports include that restaurant's name, address and Google place id. Reports never include your location. They're stored as issues in our private GitHub repository (see the GitHub privacy statement). Email us to have a report deleted. Please don't put personal information in a report.
Children
Dinner Decided isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
